To understand how virtual worlds can change the way we work, learn, collaborate and relax, we have to change the paradigm of how we think about workplaces and schools and entertainment venues. Historically changes such as the move from horse and carriage to cars were plagued with old thinking during the transition. Names such as the "horseless carriage" as well as cautious behaviour such waving flags and ringing bells when a car were used.

Old thinking:

  1. The essential measure of productivity was the employees physical presence in the building. (Source)

New thinking
  1. Productivity is measured by work outcomes not presence or hours.
  2. The worker and student need to be entrepreneurial about marketing their personal talents, managing their reputation and establishing their value to an organization through portfolios and networking.
